Goal & what you need
Goal
Prevent altered or lost originals, broken custody, merged instruments, wrong-clerk delivery, sensitive-data exposure, unverified acceptance, and unauthorized conclusions about a will's status or effect.
What you need
- Possible original will, codicil, or related writing received or controlled after notice of death
- Responsible lawyer assigned to determine venue, timing, instrument treatment, and deposit instructions
- Secure physical workspace, custody log, and current clerk information
Check your firm’s process. This lesson teaches a safe general workflow. Your firm’s software, folder names, naming rules, retention steps, and escalation contacts may differ. If you are unsure, stop and ask your supervisor.
