Goal & what you need
Goal
Correct the location without hiding the error, losing the record, or creating another uncontrolled disclosure.
What you need
- Access to the approved repository and the misplaced item.
- Reliable identifiers for the wrong and correct matters.
- The organization's designated supervisor, responsible lawyer, records, privacy, security, or technology contact.
- Authorization to change access or move records; if authorization is unclear, stop and escalate.
Check your firm’s process. This lesson teaches a safe general workflow. Your firm’s software, folder names, naming rules, retention steps, and escalation contacts may differ. If you are unsure, stop and ask your supervisor.

- 1Stop. Do not keep editing, forwarding, downloading, or sharing the misplaced item. Do not try to hide the mistake.
