Correct a Document Saved to the Wrong Matter

Correct a document saved to the wrong matter by containing the error, checking access, preserving audit facts, using an authorized correction method, and verifying both locations.

Core lesson: 5-10 minutes Reviewed against 10 authoritative and vendor sources

Goal & what you need

Goal

Correct the location without hiding the error, losing the record, or creating another uncontrolled disclosure.

What you need

  • Access to the approved repository and the misplaced item.
  • Reliable identifiers for the wrong and correct matters.
  • The organization's designated supervisor, responsible lawyer, records, privacy, security, or technology contact.
  • Authorization to change access or move records; if authorization is unclear, stop and escalate.

Check your firm’s process. This lesson teaches a safe general workflow. Your firm’s software, folder names, naming rules, retention steps, and escalation contacts may differ. If you are unsure, stop and ask your supervisor.
