Use Track Changes and Comments Without Losing Control of the Draft

Use the CONTROL workflow to preserve one authoritative Word draft, make edits and questions reviewable, reconcile branches, and produce separately labeled redline and clean copies after markup and metadata checks.

Core lesson: 8-13 minutes Reviewed against 8 official and supporting sources

Goal & what you need

Goal

Keep collaborative legal-document review attributable, recoverable, and complete while preventing lost edits, silent changes, conflicting copies, unresolved comments, and hidden information from reaching the wrong audience.

What you need

  • Correct client, matter, document, purpose, and requested review scope
  • Identified authoritative working draft and approved storage location
  • Approved reviewers, permissions, deadline, and substantive decision owner
  • Microsoft Word or another approved review tool
  • Applicable naming, versioning, confidentiality, metadata, approval, and release procedure

Check your firm’s process. This lesson teaches a safe general workflow. Your firm’s software, folder names, naming rules, retention steps, and escalation contacts may differ. If you are unsure, stop and ask your supervisor.
