Goal & what you need

Goal

Improve billing clarity and reduce unsupported reconstruction, wrong-matter entries, vague narratives, unnecessary disclosure, code errors, duplicate time, and unauthorized billing treatment.

What you need

  • Verified work performed and actual elapsed time or a trustworthy contemporaneous record
  • Correct client, matter, date, and timekeeper
  • Applicable fee agreement, client billing guidelines, and organization procedure
  • Approved timekeeping system and required task or activity codes
  • Authorized reviewer for unclear billing, no-charge, adjustment, or write-off treatment

Check your firm’s process. This lesson teaches a safe general workflow. Your firm’s software, folder names, naming rules, retention steps, and escalation contacts may differ. If you are unsure, stop and ask your supervisor.
